(Gray News) – A mom and her 3-year-old son both drowned in a residential pool in Canada, officials said.

The tragedy happened in Lachine, a borough in Montreal, late Tuesday evening, according to CTV News.

The Lachine mayor said in a statement on Facebook that the deaths appear to be a tragic accident. The mother reportedly jumped into the pool to save her son, but she did not know how to swim, and both drowned.

The mayor said the chain of events started with a balloon that fell into the pool.

“It was a balloon that fell into the dug pool that triggered a series of actions that led to the drowning of the 3-year-old boy and his 34-year-old mother who tried to save him but unfortunately couldn’t swim,” Lachine Mayor Maja Vodanovic wrote.

She added, “The worst nightmares ever. It’s hard to know what to say or do in difficult times like this. We will be there to help, psychologically assist the family in need.”

CTV reports that both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Neighbors tell CTV that just hours before the tragedy, they saw the mom and toddler at a parade. They said they are heartbroken over the loss.
