Trees down, thousands without power after Wednesday afternoon storms
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Wednesday afternoon storms have left thousands without power, widespread damage and some homes needing repair.
As of 9 p.m., Ameren Missouri reported 104 outages in St. Charles County and 1,912 outages in St. Louis County. Less than 100 outages were reported in both Jefferson County and the City of St. Louis.
At one point in the afternoon Ameran reported 4,106 outages in St. Charles County and 1,174 outages in St. Louis County.
“There wasn’t any warning at all,” said Tom Nyhan.
Nyhan said he didn’t hear sirens until roughly 10 minutes after the storm hit. His clue it was coming? It didn’t feel right outside.
“All of a sudden it got really dark, really windy,” said Nyhan.
He lives on Vintage Oaks Drive in the northeast part of Wildwood, where we found plenty of downed trees — one leaning on a home — and debris from homes in random yards.
Nyhan is happy he took cover.
“You can feel the sucking sound while I was sitting there and all of a sudden I just started running downstairs,” said Nyhan.
A few blocks away off Highway 109, one home stayed intact but was hit hard, with an awning out front and a sun porch out back going down with the storm.
“We could feel the wind blowing around making noise, moving things around, blowing things around, so that’s when we went down to the basement,” said Larry Strassburger.
In St. Peters, First Alert 4 spotted water and debris on Howell Road down the street from Central Elementary School. The road was closed at one point as some of the water was two feet deep.
In west St. Louis County, there were reports of downed trees along Strecker.
The rainfall prompted the St. Louis Cardinals to postpone their game at Busch Stadium. A split doubleheader will be played on Thursday, with the first game starting at 12:45 p.m. and the second game starting at 6:45 p.m.
