Renowned chef’s disaster relief organization coordinates thousands of meals for St. Louis tornado victims, volunteers
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - An international nonprofit organization is mobilizing to connect families in the path of the tornado with high-quality food from local chefs.
The World Central Kitchen, founded by renowned Chef José Andrés, responds to disasters all over the world. Kate Dozier, a local chef who volunteers with the organization, has coordinated kitchens internationally in response to humanitarian crises.
Now Dozier is working on the ground in St. Louis, bringing local restaurants together to provide meals for tornado victims and volunteers.
“All of our meals are very balanced, nutritiously dense. We realize that this may be the only meal someone gets before they go work on their house,” Dozier said.
As of Friday, WCK has coordinated nearly 44,000 meals from 25 local restaurants.
At the organization’s distribution site at Artworks on Delmar, meals included chicken lo mien from Nudo House down the street in the loop.
Qui Tran, the owner of Nudo House, described the damage he had seen along the Delmar corridor as heartbreaking.
“Every restaurant is pulling their resources right now,” Tran said. “I’m really proud of our city.”
The organization is looking for other places to set up food distribution sites. Currently, they are serving food at the following locations:
