ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A mother in north St. Louis County is concerned about the lack of school nurses.

Taylor Croom posted a video on social media after she went to her daughter’s school in the Ferguson-Florissant School District and was told by a staff member that there were no school nurses.

“They had to send kids home because one had an asthma attack and there was no one to give him his medication. So it’s not what she said, it’s what I saw,” recalled Croom.

The school district issued a newsletter rebutting Croom’s claims.

“The district will have school nurses next year,” read part of the newsletter. “There were never any plans to eliminate FFSD-employed nurses.”

The district went on to state that every school has a nurse this year, and in larger schools, there is more than one. They also said that some buildings may share a nurse because of how the district is changing how they approach staffing.

Missouri law does not require public schools to have a school nurse. The decision to have one or not is made at the local level.
