FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The truck driver prosecutors say is responsible for a fiery crash that killed a Sullivan woman is now in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to court records.

Manpreet Singh is charged in the March 2024 crash on I-44 that killed Edith McKee, 59. He faces one charge of first-degree involuntary manslaughter.

Officials with Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) say Singh was behind the wheel of the semi-truck heading westbound on I-44 in Franklin County when it veered off the roadway and plowed through cable barriers into the eastbound lanes. Both McKee’s vehicle and the semi immediately caught fire. McKee was pronounced dead at the scene. Singh suffered minor injuries.

MSHP officials say Singh fell asleep behind the wheel. First Alert 4 also uncovered a troubling history of phone usage behind the wheel, according to Singh’s social media.

A Franklin County grand jury indicted Singh for first-degree involuntary manslaughter in November. After issuing a warrant for his arrest, authorities arrested Singh in December in Douglas County, Missouri. He posted bond and, with court approval, surrendered his port to his attorney in January.

Court documents show Singh is in ICE custody as of March 4, 2025. First Alert 4 reached out to ICE, which has not clarified his exact location or reason for being in custody.

Singh’s immigration status is also unclear.

At the time of the crash, Singh was hauling USPS mail. A First Alert 4 investigation found USPS declines to vet for themselves thousands of truckers carrying your mail.

Singh is scheduled for a case review in Franklin County on May 20.

Singh’s federal detention comes after President Donald Trump signed into law the Laken Riley Act, which “mandates the federal detention of illegal immigrants who are accused of theft, burglary, assaulting a law enforcement officer, and any crime that causes death or serious bodily injury.”
