NORMANDY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The Normandy High School Chess Club is gaining recognition across the area.
The club was started two years ago by Phillip Berry, the school’s family engagement liaison, as a way to get to know the kids. In the center of the lunchroom, he put down a chessboard, and students started asking if they could play. He offered $5 to anyone who could beat him to pique their interest.
After eight undefeated weeks, the teachers chipped in, and then a sophomore student won.
The team’s captain played Senator Josh Hawley and beat him. The team also recently competed at the Gateway Chess Regional Tournament, where they won first place.
